When you receive your unfinished wood crates from North Rustic Design they come ready to stain right out of the box. We created this step-by-step tutorial so your crate will turn out perfect. Once you have gathered all your supplies:

  • Set-up your work station(we use cardboard) and make sure you have on your gloves and protective glasses. Then you will need to open the can with a screw driver gently prying open the top with a firm grip on the the base of the can. We are using Sherwin-Williams Minwax “Golden Oak”
  • It is always a good idea to stir your stain with a stick. If you are picking your stain up from your local Sherwin-Williams store, they also have a machine that will shake it up for you, so you wouldn’t have to stir much if you were going home to start your project right away.
  • We recommend starting with a staining brush and doing all the slates of the crate first. Once you have stained the slates on all three sides, make sure to wipe off any stain that has not penetrated the wood.
  • Next you are going to use the staining pad. A staining pad works great because it can cover the surface faster than a brush and leaves very little stain behind. After you have stained the entire crate it is time to let it stand before wiping down with a rag. We recommend from 5-15 minutes. 5 minutes for a lighter color and 15 for a darker shade. note: if you want to apply a second coat you need to wait 4-6 hours before reapplying.
  • In a ventilated area you need to let the crate air out. If you want to add a clear-coat a minimum of 8 hours is recommended before applying.
  • Let your crate dry out for a day in a ventilated area and in the meantime think about how to use it. end table, night stand, or a coffee table
