Product Displays with Wooden Crates for Point of Purchase Displays

Here are some reasons why wooden crates make great product displays:

  1. Rustic Charm

Wooden crates have a rustic and vintage charm that can add character to any product display. Whether you are selling fresh produce, artisanal goods, or vintage clothing, wooden crates can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes customers feel comfortable and more likely to browse through your products.

  1. Durability

Wooden crates are incredibly durable and can withstand the wear and tear of regular use. Unlike plastic or cardboard displays, wooden crates won’t break or bend easily, making them a great investment for businesses that need to transport their products frequently. With proper care and maintenance, wooden crates can last for years.

  1. Customizable

Wooden crates can be easily customized to fit your brand’s aesthetic. You can paint them in your brand’s colors or add your logo to make them more personalized and recognizable. You can also add shelving, dividers, or lighting to create a more dynamic display.

  1. Versatility

Wooden crates come in all shapes and sizes, making them an ideal choice for displaying a wide range of products. Whether you’re showcasing fresh produce, wine bottles, or handmade crafts, you can find a wooden crate that will fit your needs. Wooden crates can also be stacked or arranged in various ways to create a more visually appealing display.

  1. Eco-Friendly

Wooden crates are an eco-friendly option for businesses that want to reduce their carbon footprint. They are made from natural materials and can be reused or recycled, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. By using wooden crates as product displays, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship.

If you’re thinking about using wooden crates as product displays, here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Choose the right size and shape

Make sure you choose wooden crates that are the right size and shape for your products. Crates that are too small or too large can make your display look unappealing or cluttered.

  1. Keep it organized

Organize your products in a logical and visually appealing way. Use different heights and angles to create depth and dimension, and make sure your products are easy to see and access.

  1. Create a theme

Create a theme or a story around your display. For example, if you’re showcasing fresh produce, you could create a “farm-to-table” theme with rustic wooden crates and burlap accents.

In conclusion, wooden crates are an excellent option for businesses looking to create unique and sustainable product displays. With their rustic charm, durability, and versatility, wooden crates can help businesses stand out and make a lasting impression on their customers.

Modular crate style bar units perfect for your next Trade Show Booth Display

Here at North Rustic Design we are always adding new products to our line of fine crates, product displays and rustic furnishings.
Our newest design is just in time for the outdoor deck and patio season. Many of our customers have been asking for a modular
bar unit  that they utilize as an addition to their outside living space, basement bar or man/woman caves.

are approximately 40 inches in length (although we do custom sizing to fit your needs) and come with removable 3/4 inch tops and
trim boards to give a clean, finished look. You can then add as many sections as you want to make your bar anywhere from 40 inches
to 40 feet long! We then stain the sections in any one of our many colors or will stain to a color of your choice. We work closely with
Sherwin-Williams so you can pick out a stain at your local store and we will have it made for us here.

Product Branding – Store Displays – Gift Crates that Rock

Product Branding and Store Displays

Here at North Rustic Design we pride ourselves in the manufacture and printing of all types of wooden point of purchase displays and packaging products.

Our talented and experienced art department has worked with some of the largest companies in America to design stunning store displays and unique gift boxes and crates. Our extremely well built products are unlike any other in the industry and by embellishing them with your own company logo you are sure to get positive responses from your customers and have an eye catching and unusual way to market your goods. Our wooden crates, boxes and stackable displays are perfect for  grocery, wine and liquor, floral and a host of other products and wares. We custom build to your specifications, stain to your exacting colors and print your logo or other information in a variety of different colors with a tough and durable enamel based ink.

The screen printing process that we use has many advantages over the old traditional hot branding (where a logo is burned into the wood with a hot brand) and laser engraving. We are able to produce your goods at a faster and much more economical rate as the other types of embellishing are painfully slow or involve additional costs to the customer. We are able to achieve a higher level of fine detail and most importantly, can print your logo in many different colors! And the results are exceptional. We can create an earthy, rustic display or a colorful and vivid one that will truly pop! Whatever you can imagine we can build for you. With over 20 years of experience in design, our artist can assist you in making your display truly original and give your product an added ‘wow’ factor. If you have  your own in-house design team and an existing logo, we will stay true to your art and make sure we get your full approval on all designs. If you need a little help with the idea, we are more than happy to work with you to create something you will be proud of. If you want a rustic, distressed feel, we can create an overlay effect that looks great on wood.

We build stacked crate displays with or without locking wheels. Individual units the can be placed against a wall and redesigned whenever you are looking for a change of pace. Wooden crates and boxes with or without lids that you can distribute your product in and they can all be embellished with your brand right on the sides or lids. The cost of the printing is minimal. The very low initial set-up fee is a one time expense and there is never an art charge for preparing your existing design for printing. We offer color matching of ink if needed and always send proofs for your approval before starting any print job. In other words…we are here for you.

So the next time you are launching a new product or looking for an unique way to promote your goods, look no further than North Rustic Design and let Josh, Kevin and the rest of the gang here assist you in bringing your ideas to life. We look forward to hearing from you!

Retail Display Units

We started North Rustic Design with a simple notion – if you build high quality products at good prices we will stay busy. Sometimes it can be hard for people to realize that we are in the constant state of production on various projects. Our largest clients give us Purchase Orders typically 1-2 months in advance. And for our large seasonal gift crate orders from 3-6 months depending how many 1000’s they need in that particular year.

What happens when put together our wood crates for our clients? You get retail display units that are built to last the retail environment. We either fasten our displays together with wood screws if you need a permanent solution, or if you need to be able to put together and take a part, we use nuts, bolts, and washers. An interesting project was with the Boy Scouts. The Philmont Scout Ranch is a mecca of sorts. Our rolling retail display units were a perfect fit over the plastic cubes they had used to sell their t-shirts from. A beautiful logo on the sides of the crates made an eyesore into a retail display of awesome.

Shipping – our partner in Freight Estes Express

I sometimes think back to when I started North Rustic Design. From the screen house, to garage, to the basement(1000 square feet) and the garage and now to our manufacturing facility. I still remember the day when we had made just enough money to buy our first forklift and had it delivered. I think that marked the day we were no longer a hobby shop, but a real company. We pride ourselves on not only building the highest quality wooden crate retail displays, but making sure that get there safely. We are experts in taking into account shipping considerations when we are helping you decide what is the perfect size crate for your retail display. What we do is science and art. With crates designed to nest inside of each other, you will be get maxing shipping saving.

We have sent 1000 or more full pallets of crates out our doors!

Have your own freight provider, no problem, some of our largest clients arrange their own freight.

We thank all of our customers that order from us frequently and look forward to building more business relationships to help your company stand out in an every changing retail world.

Custom Wood Product Display – Retail Fixtures – Trade Show Booth Exhibits

Wood Product Displays with your company logo perfect for your trade show booth or retail store

If you build it, they will come. We have been building high quality wholesale wood crate product displays since 2009. In 2015 we built our own screen printing division and integrated it into our manufacturing facility located in Chippewa Falls Wisconsin. It has been a very important part of our growing business. With an endless variety of base stain colors to choose from, along with our ability to custom blend our inks, we can match any base color you would want and the perfect screen printing color. We work closely with our customers to fit their needs perfectly. Below I will share with your how we have helped a variety of companies with their Point of Purchase Displays for products in the retail setting.

Here are some of the custom wood product display crates we have done recently

  • Chicago Cubs – as the Cubs were clinching the pennant last year, the marketing department was gearing up for some high quality and memorable gift crates with the #FlytheW logo. We created a custom size crate with a removable lid that they could fill up with the gifts they wanted to give their Cub fans.
  • Hill Billy Bourbon – a very smooth tasting bourbon that has led to their expansion. Each step of the way we have been providing them with POP – Point of Purchase Displays at their retail locations to showcase their great product in a product display that stands out from the crowd. Our custom design and distressed logo was a perfect fit for their product display.
  • SHI – A technology company from Austin TX – was a doing a large corporate event. Being that they are a corporate re-seller for large brands like Microsoft, Apple, and HP they wanted a wood crate with multiple logos on both ends to give everyone attending their event. They put gifts and company information in each wood crate for each guest to take home.
  • Hoffmaster – A company that is from our home state of Wisconsin is a leader in the disposable tableware industry. They were looking to make a statement for their product display with a custom designed trade show booth made from our wood crates. We helped with the design, all we need from anyone interested in a quote is the size of booth space you need to have filled. Hoffmaster needed 2 (5 x 6) displays 1- 5 x 10 display and 2- 4 x 4 displays. We staggered their company logo as to not overpower their visitors and created a beautiful booth stained golden oak with black screen print. You can watch the video I made below. The nice thing is, the whole trade show booth exhibit fits nicely on 2 pallets to transport between trade shows.

Custom Trade Show Exhibit with Company Logo

We have expanded our product offerings over the years by working closely with our customers. Our production capabilities now include the ability to custom brand your logo on any of our high quality wood crates and boxes. We have designed much more than the projects I explained above. Please take some time to explore our website and check out our buyers guides for wood crates and wood boxes to learn more.

Screen Printing on Crates and Boxes for promotion and decor

Screen printing on crates

Here at North Rustic Design, one of our unique practices involves screen printing on our traditional solid pine and oak crates. What first started with a customer request for their company logo imprinted on their crate order soon blossomed into a full-fledged division of our company.  Fortunately, our graphic designer here at NRD had well over 20 years of experience working in the screen printing industry when he came on board with us and so with his help and the combined efforts of the entire staff, we set up our printing department. We are often asked about our process and we thought it might be fun to share some information with our customers.

When we receive a request for an imprinted logo or design from a customer, the first step is to coordinate with the client regarding their artwork. While most companies are already in possession of their own corporate logo, we do offer design services for those who don’t.

Once we receive the art file from them, usually via email, we go to work on mocking up the art to send to them for approval. Once the proof is accepted, the design is sized to fit on whatever product we are constructing and then transferred to a film positive.

Once the film is prepared, a silk screen is pulled from our inventory. Depending on the detail and overall type of design we are printing, we select a screen with a certain mesh count that supports the art. The screens are coated with a light sensitive emulsion and the film and screen are placed into an exposure unit. Once the time of exposure is calculated, the screen is flooded with high intensity light in a process that we call ‘burning’. This process will harden the emulsion where light passes through and stop the light where the dark areas of the film, the design itself, blocks it.

Once the screen is exposed for the correct amount of time, it is taken out and washed with a gentle spray of water. This opens up the mesh where the design was blocking the light and creates a negative image on the screen. The screen is then dried and all the areas of the screen, other than the design itself, are taped off and readied for printing. The prepared screen is placed onto a print table and clamped into place.

We then prep all the boards for printing by carefully selecting them and sanding them to a smooth finish and staining them if the job requires. These boards are then placed, one at a time in a guide that maintains the proper positioning of the print and a consistent off contact height so that each and every print is the same.

The screen is then ‘loaded’ with a special type of ink that is specifically designed for use on wood and that once cured is totally waterproof and has a hard finish. We offer many different colors of inks, depending on your logo and the color of crate you desire.  The screen is dropped onto the wooden panels or boards and the ink is forced through the image area with a tool called a ‘squeegee’. Like everything else in the process, there are several types of squeegee durometers depending on the type of ink and the design itself.

The printed boards are then set aside and dried. Once they are dry and ready to assemble they go to the shop to be constructed.

As you can see, it’s quite a process. The finished product, however is a fantastic way to advertise your brand in a new and unique way that is only available from your friends at North Rustic Design.

How we use our own Products

How we use our own products

At North Rustic Design we are family owned business with a great customer base ranging from some of the biggest corporations in the USA to our valued retail customers that purchase from our websites daily. We offer a wide variety of products for sale, but the biggest part of our business is selling wood crates. Wood crates have always been popular for home decor and storage. After looking around our home one day, I decided it would be fitting to write a story about how we use our own products in our home for decor and storage.

As single father of 3 beautiful kids, Sophia, Iris, and Collin, they are my inspiration and also give me something to write about that will shed light on the many uses for wooden crates.

When you walk into our mudroom, each of my children has a wood crate sitting on it’s end, that they sit down on and put their boots, shoes, hats, and gloves in after school. Sophia went with a pink crate, Iris has a blue one, and Collin wanted a “tough” black color. If you are looking for a versatile mudroom idea, you should really think about some wood crates. Unlike a big bulky bench, you can move the crates around as needed. One of the 1st things the kids do when they get home and get undressed is take a quick left to watch a little television and ask “what’s for supper”.

Our entertainment center  is made from 4 of our x-l wood crates in dark walnut. the t.v. sits on top, surrounded by various items, and below is where our cable box goes. Because each crate has a built in shelf, each one of children has their school and sports pictures in their storage cubby as they call it. Sophia and Iris have their basketball and softball pictures in chronological order. Collin has his t-ball and hockey pictures too. Someday one them will get the entertainment center because all of our products are truly built to last generations.

Having been a high school teacher for 5 years and getting M.A. from UWEC I have developed a nice collection of books. One of the more popular uses of our high quality crates is as a crate bookshelf. I constructed my bookshelf with 12 of our Large Wood Crates 18 x 12 x 12  These seem to be the best size to use. They are also nice because they are modular and can be arranged on their sides or ends or both. If you like to change things around or our on the move like I was as a college student, wood crates make the perfect bookcase.

Having 3 kids from 8-12 years old, I have to say if our crate table wasn’t built “Badger Tough” it would have fallen apart years ago. From getting jumped off, sat on, and drinks spilled on it, our rustic crate table has stood the test of time. In the winter months in Wisconsin it gets quite cold and when the kids come in from playing in the snow, I like to have a couple cups of hot cocoa waiting for them.

Between the living room and dining room we have the area that our “babies” live in. My youngest daughter Iris has 2 Guinea Pigs, Oreo and Smores. She is very punctual when it comes to cleaning and feeding the girls. Above the area where the cages are we have crates set up where she stores their food, bedding, and here cleaning supplies. She prides herself on keeping their area and cages clean.

We also use crates on our counter top between our dining room and kitchen. They work great to put mail in and all the kids school papers. In our pantry we have our crates stacked up where we put food. The kids love looking in their little crate cubby to see what kind of snack they can have in their lunch for school the next day.

We have done many DYI crate projects over the years. When the girls were small of course they wanted to stain crates pretty colors. They have a bright collection of crates in their bedroom that they use as end tables and they store their clothes with vertically stacked crates in their closet.

We also make very nice wood keepsake boxes that I found over the years work great for storing all the kids school, sports, and other keepsakes in. Each of my 3 children has their own box and my oldest daughter Sophia, has another one because she is in 7th grade.

The nice thing about using wood crates for storage and decor is that they can be moved around with ease, and when the time comes to leave the nest, my girls already said they are bringing their crates with.

Growing up I had a lot of toy matchbox cars. I put my collection in one of our ammo crate boxes that we keep in the basement. My son Collin doesn’t play with them much, but when Charlie, who is a younger neighborhood boy comes over to play, he goes right to the car box. So we have started calling it “Charlies Box”.

One of the things I find myself doing a lot these days is helping people come up with designs to use crates in their own home, shop, or trade show booth. So if you need help in designing a space using crates, if you give me the dimensions I can design it for you.

We hope you enjoyed reading “How we use our own products” and we are always here to answer any questions via email: northrusticdesign@gmail.com or by phone: 715-563-0580

Best Regards,

How to Stain a Wooden Crate

Staining a Wood Crate

Wood crates are popular for storing items in your home and have many uses for home decor. At North Rustic Design we are proud manufacturers of a large selection of unfinished wooden crates that are ready to stain your favorite Sherwin-Williams color. We hope you find this “How to Stain a Wooden Crate” guide helpful and remember you can find all your staining materials and your favorite color at you local Sherwin -Williams store. Staining a crate is a great Do-it-yourself weekend project and the finished product is something you will be glad to use.

What you will need

  • Wooden Crates
  • your favorite Sherwin-Williams stain
  • work station
  • brushes
  • staining pads
  • rags
  • gloves and protective glasses
medium crate group w_text

When you receive your unfinished wood crates from North Rustic Design they come ready to stain right out of the box. We created this step-by-step tutorial so your crate will turn out perfect. Once you have gathered all your supplies:

  • Set-up your work station(we use cardboard) and make sure you have on your gloves and protective glasses. Then you will need to open the can with a screw driver gently prying open the top with a firm grip on the the base of the can. We are using Sherwin-Williams Minwax “Golden Oak”
  • It is always a good idea to stir your stain with a stick. If you are picking your stain up from your local Sherwin-Williams store, they also have a machine that will shake it up for you, so you wouldn’t have to stir much if you were going home to start your project right away.
  • We recommend starting with a staining brush and doing all the slates of the crate first. Once you have stained the slates on all three sides, make sure to wipe off any stain that has not penetrated the wood.
  • Next you are going to use the staining pad. A staining pad works great because it can cover the surface faster than a brush and leaves very little stain behind. After you have stained the entire crate it is time to let it stand before wiping down with a rag. We recommend from 5-15 minutes. 5 minutes for a lighter color and 15 for a darker shade. note: if you want to apply a second coat you need to wait 4-6 hours before reapplying.
  • In a ventilated area you need to let the crate air out. If you want to add a clear-coat a minimum of 8 hours is recommended before applying.
  • Let your crate dry out for a day in a ventilated area and in the meantime think about how to use it. end table, night stand, or a coffee table

At North Rustic Design we have grown our high quality wood product line with Sherwin-Williams by our side. Our local store is very helpful and helped us in expanding our standard staining options to 17 different colors that represent the color spectrum. Not only do they carry many different stock colors, they can match any custom color you could imagine. Our beautiful wooden crates together with the high quality stain and staining accessories from Sherwin-Williams make for a great weekend project that will add a beautiful home decor element that you did yourself. After you stained some wood crates your favorite color, we’d love to hear how you used them!
